VFW 8905 - Cypress, TX

Being an "avid" fan of indie wrestling in Texas means you drive. A lot. Since this last October (2010) when I started keeping this blog, I have been making at least one trip to Austin (175 miles (all mileages one way)) and one trip to San Antonio (210 miles) every month. So far this year (2011), I have driven 220 miles to Corpus Christi (Robstown) and made my longest drive (so far) of 250 miles to Balch Springs (just outside Dallas). But not one of those trips or hell, even all of them combined, is as big a pain in the ass as a 30 mile drive across Houston at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. Never, ever again! From now on, I'm treating this (the trip to a WoW show) as a full blown road trip. I am going to leave early and spend the afternoon shopping and hanging out in the Cypress area and then have a leisurely dinner. That way I might actually be in a good mood when I get to the show. Well, if not a good mood at least I won't want to kill anybody.

Anyway... to the wrestling. It's another good crowd (350+) for the WoW. If the audience size keeps growing, someone is going to have to start keeping an eye out for the fire marshal. No worries tonight though. As usual, the ring announcer is the ever dapper Tony Brooklyn.

News: New Millennium Wrestling Cancels March Show

According to the New Millennium Wrestling Facebook page, the March 26th show in Balch Springs has been cancelled due to the owner Will Riggs being cast in an upcoming production of "The Fantasticks". The March 26 show was the one where the Iron Sheik was scheduled to appear. It (their Facebook page), further states that the Iron Sheik will be brought back when the NMW gets back up and running after the "Fantasticks" production closes. I have no idea when that will be.

Texas Wrestlers On Monday Night Raw

Some Texas wrestlers made a brief appearance on tonight's Raw (3/7/2011) acting as WWE security personnel who come down to the ring to escort Vickie Guerrero out of the building (following the John Morrison / Dolph Ziggler match). I recognized three of the four as Girard St. Christopher, "Rockstar" Robbie Gilmore, and Alex Reigns, all Texas based indie wrestlers. I'm guessing the fourth man was also a Texas talent but I just didn't recognize him.

** Update (03/16/2011) **
This is a YOUTUBE link to the Morrison / Ziggler match from RAW 3/7/2011. Security comes down at about the 7 minute mark. If anyone recognizes the unknown (to me anyway) fourth man please add it in the comments.

Texas All-Star Wrestling presents the "18th Annual Humble Rumble"

March 5, 2011

Coaches Sports Bar - Humble, TX

The "Humble Rumble" is an annual event held by Texas All-Star Wrestling in -- where else? Humble, Texas. This year (2011) the card is being held at Coaches Sports Bar outside on the patio. I mention this because it was cold. Cold and windy. Just down the road one of those bank time and temperature signs reads 49°. Now the patio area at Coaches has a (lit) fire pit and those portable patio heaters but unfortunately for me as I was running late, by the time I got there all of the 75+ fans at the show had already surrounded the heat sources. From where I was sitting I could see the action just fine, but it was cold. Well, at least the show started almost right on time.

Ring announcer "Diamond Dawg" starts us off by welcoming everyone to the show and then informs us that there's nine matches on the card. In my head I'm already doing the math; nine matches plus two intermissions (TASW uses two intermissions during a show) equals me freezing my ass off. And hey, there's more good news... we're going to start the show with a promo. The TASW champion Dylan "Super" Starr is out and issues an open challenge for any former TASW champion to face him (Starr) for his title.

We have a challenger and it is... Bones? Here's a guy who's been gone so long (2 years) that I don't even remember him. Anyway, Bones doesn't want to wrestle Starr, he wants to be the referee for the match. He has someone else in mind to face Starr. Some bad country music blares out over the PA and out comes the real challenger Bubba Lee Travis. For some reason Starr is okay with all of this and so later this evening the champion Dylan Starr will square off against challenger Bubba Lee Travis for Starr's TASW Heavyweight Championship.
