VFW 8905 - Cypress, TX

Being an "avid" fan of indie wrestling in Texas means you drive. A lot. Since this last October (2010) when I started keeping this blog, I have been making at least one trip to Austin (175 miles (all mileages one way)) and one trip to San Antonio (210 miles) every month. So far this year (2011), I have driven 220 miles to Corpus Christi (Robstown) and made my longest drive (so far) of 250 miles to Balch Springs (just outside Dallas). But not one of those trips or hell, even all of them combined, is as big a pain in the ass as a 30 mile drive across Houston at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. Never, ever again! From now on, I'm treating this (the trip to a WoW show) as a full blown road trip. I am going to leave early and spend the afternoon shopping and hanging out in the Cypress area and then have a leisurely dinner. That way I might actually be in a good mood when I get to the show. Well, if not a good mood at least I won't want to kill anybody.

Anyway... to the wrestling. It's another good crowd (350+) for the WoW. If the audience size keeps growing, someone is going to have to start keeping an eye out for the fire marshal. No worries tonight though. As usual, the ring announcer is the ever dapper Tony Brooklyn.

Pre-Show

Match #1 -- 5 Guys Burger Battle
"Primetime" Ricky Douglas vs. Bolt Brady vs. Zordoff vs. Shawn Houston vs. Mike Fyre
For the uninitiated, a 5 Guys Burger Battle is just a regular Battle Royal (over the top rope elimination) that is named after a WoW sponsor and limited to five participants. In any case, whether it's a Battle Royal or a Royal Rumble or even a Burger Battle, it's best to just keep things simple.
  • Bolt Brady eliminates Ricky Douglas as well as himself.
  • Zordoff is dumped by Shawn Houston.
  • Houston dropkicks Fyre off the apron and wins the Burger Battle.

Main Show

Match #1 -- WoW Women's Championship Match (Triple Threat)
Jen Alise vs. Simply Luscious vs. (c) Barbi Hayden
Ah, three of my favorite joshi wrestlers in one match. Uh oh, Tony Brooklyn specifically mentions a 30 minute time limit, possibly foreshadowing the outcome of this match or one upcoming. As far as storylines go there still has been no indication whether Luscious has aligned herself with the Psycho Circus or not. I'm thinking we're about to find out.

Jen and Luscious immediately doubleteam the champion. That doesn't mean anything as far as allegiances go since both detest young Barbi. With Barbi temporarily down, Jen and Luscious are trading chops. Double DDT by Barbi. Another doubleteam by the challengers. A pattern quickly emerges. Anytime Barbi shows any momentum at all she is cut off by a doubleteam. If either Jen or Luscious attempts to cover Barbi though, the other will break up the pin attempt. Finally both Luscious and Jen have had enough of this and the two face off in the centre of the ring. So of course Barbi sneaks in and rolls up Jen for the win.

Barbi shows she's a thinking man's champion by quickly getting the hell out of Dodge. Luscious and Jen are pissed and taking it out on each other, catfight style. Mike Dell and Ryan Genesis are quickly out to break this up. The leader of the Psycho Circus, Scot Summers, is much more relaxed and casually ambles to the ring. Summers teases the audience with the idea of a little girl on girl action., but that's not going to happen. Instead, Summers commands both ladies to calm down and then proceeds to clue in Jen (and the audience) on just who Simply Luscious is. Summers says Luscious "has been Psycho Circus for over 10 years" and that Luscious was/is the only women who has ever pinned him. Summers wants the two women to shake hands. Luscious ain't feeling it and bails to the outside. Summers offers to buy her two bottles of Vodka and Lushious can't get back in the ring fast enough.

With the ladies situation at least temporarily taken care of, Summers calls Tony Brooklyn into the ring. Summers wants Brooklyn to read the card he has made for tonight's show. Brooklyn says something about Summers being the new G.M. (apparently it was in his contract) and reads off the matches; Jaykus Plisken versus Ryan Genesis, Scot Summers versus Chris Lee for the WoW Heavyweight Championship, and Impeccable (Ken Carson & Joey Figueroa) versus Mike Dell and David Stahr for the WoW Tag Team titles. Brooklyn is none too pleased with with all this and especially by DJ King missing his Heavyweight title shot last month and Jaykus Plisken (the #1 Contender) not getting a title shot this month. But Brooklyn has no authority over Sumers, so grumbling is about his only option.

Match #2 -- DJ King vs. "Ruthless" Ryan Davidson
Davidson takes to the microphone before King comes out wanting to remind everyone just who he is, he is after all a former WoW Heavyweight Champion and he "used to rule this ring". I'm a fan so I don't need no reminding. Good back and forth match. Just as I was thinking that Davidson is wrestling this match pretty clean - he pokes King in the eye. Davidson checks the ceiling height as he climbs up to the top turnbuckle, unlike others (Carson) who always forget that the opening above the ring area isn't really much of an opening at all. His trip to the top rope is a bust anyway as he misses the splash. King connects with a spinning neckbreaker and gets the victory.

Postmatch, Tony Brooklyn has a question for DJ King, specifically he wants to know why he (King) missed last months show. DJ King explains that on that particular Friday, prior to the show, he got a call from his brother (Silky Baines), who communicated to him that their mother (in San Antonio) had been in a serious car accident.  So DJ got in his car and drove to San Antonio.  But it was all a lie! There was no car accident. Their mother was never in San Antonio. Silky isn't even his brother. Wait... I may be wrong about that last one. Whatever the case, DJ doesn't stick around to confront his brother even though Silky is in the next match.

Match #3 -- WoW Outlaw Title Match
Hambone vs. (c) Silky Baines
All Outlaw Title matches are no DQ and they usually follow a simple formula. You start with a minute or two of perfunctory wrestling then out come the foreign objects to be used as weapons. Tonight's parade of plunder include a ladder, some steel folding chairs, a chain, some handcuffs, a leather strap, and a pizza pan. Silky seems to prefer the handcuffs this evening. (IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are going to tease a cuffed opponent with the handcuff key, do not stand directly in front of him/her as you do so.) Silky makes this mistake and his testis pay for it. Hambone uncuffs himself then recuffs himself to Silky, but just long enough for a short-arm lariat and a BookEnd. This is Silky's match though. When a first Ace Crusher doesn't put Hambone away, Silky uses a second one - this time onto a (setup) folding chair. Hambone's out. Silky retains the title.

** INTERMISSION **
Barbi Hayden gets mobbed by kids and creepy old guys when she comes out to sign autographs. And no, I was not one of them.

As we come back from intermission Barbi is still signing autographs, posing for pictures, etc... Brooklyn has already called three times for all wrestlers to the back, the third time even mentioning Barbi by name. She's such a rulebreaker. As Brooklyn begins the introduction to the next match, she finally crouches down off to one side and awaits an opportunity to make a break for it. After Chris Lee comes out, Barbi makes her escape with almost no one noticing.

Match #4 -- WoW Heavyweight Championship Match
"Backdraft" Chris Lee vs. (c) Scot Summers
"Backdraft" Chris Lee is an undercard guy Summers (as acting GM) handpicked to be his opponent in tonight's title defense. As if Lee wasn't already facing an uphill battle, Mike Dell is out to act as Summer's second. As the match gets underway Lee holds his own one on one with Summers, at least until he makes the mistake of chasing Summers on the outside. Dell blindsides Lee and Summers takes over from there. Lee isn't finished yet though. He is able to fight out of or use rope breaks to escape pressure holds applied by the champion, but any real momentum Lee is able to build is quickly broken up by Summers, often with Mike Dell's assistence. Summers is working the arm. Lee catches Summers in an ankle lock but is unable to get the submission. Brainbuster by Summers and that looked sick. With Lee dazed Summers locks on a rear naked choke and Lee has to submit.

Fun match. I was expecting a competitive squash but this was more than that. In what was probably his highest profile match so far, Lee went 20 minutes with the Heavyweight Champion and came across as a possible contender. Congrats to Lee for stepping up his game and to Summers for making him look good. My only criticism of Lee's performance was postmatch, when very shortly after submitting, Lee was back up on his feet and on the microphone. I mean the guy (Lee) had just been dropped on his head (brainbuster) and submitted to a choke hold, it should take time to recover. The crowd had gotten into the match and Summers could've easily kept them going another minute or two while Lee slowly gets to his feet and regains his voice. Just my opinion.

Postmatch, Lee already wants a rematch. Mike Dell knocks Lee down from behind. Dell reaches into his tights (the crotch area) and pulls out a staplegun. I had always heard a sock was the preferred method but I guess you use what you have. Anyway, Summers and Dell attempt to staple one of the Sign Guy's signs to Lee's back but it won't stay on. Chaz and DJ King come out to break this up. Chaz is noticeably moving gingerly and has his ribs taped. On the microphone Chaz explains that he was jumped in his driveway by some masked men as he was leaving to come to the show. Summers claims to know nothing about this. Chaz promises he has something big in store for the Psycho Circus.

Match #5 -- Ryan Genesis vs. Jaykus Plisken
I was looking forward to this matchup since it was announced earlier in the show. I don't get to see Ryan Genesis wrestle that often and I wanted to see what he could/would do against an opponent who can go like Jaykus Plisken. However, it quickly became obvious this wasn't going to be a showcase but rather filler before the main event. Basically what we got here is 5 minutes of stalling followed by some heel 101 and then a rollup by Plisken for the win. OK, the flash pin was a little surprising.

Postmatch, Genesis is joined by Summers, Silky Baines, and Jen Alise for a staredown with Plisken.

Main Event -- WoW Tag Team Championship Match
Mike Dell & David Stahr vs. (c) Impeccable: Joey Figueroa & Ken Carson
Impeccable are not only the Wow Tag Team Champions but also the NWA Texas Tag Team Champions. This match is only for the WoW titles. David Stahr doesn't seem like someone who Mike Dell would pick for a tag partner but here we are anyway. Barbi Hayden, who usually valets for Impeccable, is also noticeably absent from ringside.

Team Impeccable start the match hot. Mike Dell gets tossed over the top rope and down onto David Stahr. Dell was falling face first, but since it was on the other side of the ring from me I didn't see how he landed. The crowd is chanting "We want Barbi!". A doubleteam finally gets Carson in trouble. The heels (Dell and Stahr) work Carson's arm for a bit. Hot tag to Joey. Carson hits a cross body off the top rope but doesn't hit the ceiling this time. Stahr lets out one of the girliest screams I've heard in a long time as he goes flying over a low bridge. Everybody's fighting but Dell and Carson are the legal men. Top rope elbow by Dell takes out Figueroa. Stahr spears Carson. Dell covers for the victory. Mike Dell and David Stahr are the new WoW Tag Team Champions.

Postmatch, all of the Psycho Circus are out and celebrating. They (the Circus) now possess the WoW Heavyweight Championship, the WoW Cruiserweight Championship (Genesis has that title), and the WoW Tag Team Championship. Then for reasons I never understood Tony Brooklyn announces that Ryan Genesis has been suspended for a month. I guess he's got somewhere else to be on April 8th. Damn does that mean Luscious won't be here either? The now infuriated Psycho Circus rant and rave as another show closes.
