RCW Gym - Converse, TX

February 5, 2011

At some point RCW management decided it would be a swell idea to have a Sho Funaki Wrestling Clinic and their February wrestling show on the same day. Someone must have figured that it would be easier to have both events at the same location rather than trying to coordinate two different activities in two different places. That's how myself and about 150 other die hard wrestling fans ended up in a frigid warehouse on the outskirts of Converse, Texas on a chilly February night.

Ray the Voice is out to start the show. Miss Felicia enters the ring and is carrying award plaques. It appears tonight's festivities are going to begin with an award presentation. The first award of the evening is going out for "Most Shocking Moment of the Year". And the winner is... Black Monday (Joey Spector gets his championship belt back by loophole.) This brings out San Antonio's Most Unwanted for their first appearance of the night. As it turns out, every award in this first batch is for Joey Spector. He also wins awards for...
  • "Most Hated"
  • "Match of the Year" (Alissa Flash vs. Joey Spector 2 for the RCW Championship)
  • "Wrestler of the Year"
Spector seems somewhat surprised that he actually won the RCW Wrestler of the Year award. The crowd seems to have mixed feelings about this development. Spector now feels strongly that it was the fan's wives and girlfriends whose online votes put him over the top. Thankfully, the acceptance speech is kept relatively short.

Match #1 -- Steve McEnroe vs. Black Belt Jones
Steve McEnroe is the first new face of the evening. Mr. McEnroe is apparently quite the tennis enthusiast. He makes his first RCW entrance dressed like John McEnroe and carrying a tennis racket, even taking practice swings along the way. Black Belt Jones is out alone, nary another Karate Kid in sight. McEnroe not only keeps pace with Jones but gets in some nice legwork as well, including two big kneebreakers. He (McEnroe) seems to have everything in hand until he attempts a foolhardy Toro charge. However, as Jones rallies himself for a comeback, McEnroe kneecaps him. But a followup legbar submission doesn't put Jones away and here McEnroe just gives up on the legwork opting instead to just choke Jones out. Jones does remember to sell the leg during his comeback (2 dropkicks, top rope crossbody). McEnroe misses a tennis racket shot and Jones wins with a roll up. A hobbling Jones is helped to the back.

RCW head honcho Brandon Oliver himself brings out the next awards. First up is the award for "Video of the Year". And the winner is... The Karate Kids - winning for the "JoJo and Darci become the Karate Kids" video. JoJo Bravo and Darci Drake enter and accept the award. Sensei Yebisu (not present) is announced as the winner of the "Manager of the Year" award. Darci takes to the microphone and informs JoJo that she talked to Sensei Yebisu (by phone) and he had insisted that tonight they face off against each other. JoJo thinks Darci is up for the challenge and we have a second match.

Match #2 -- Darci Drake vs. JoJo Bravo
Since both are currently fan favorites this is a back and forth match with neither wrestler having a prolonged advantage on the other. Nice half crab with armbar by Darci on JoJo. A backslide gets the win for JoJo. Postmatch hug to show there is no dissension among the Karate Kids.
Miss Felicia is back with two more awards. Alissa Flash (not present) has won for "Most Popular" and "Best Physique - Female".

Match #3a -- Scott McVicious vs. Shawn Vincent
Shawn Vincent is accompanied by The Magic Man. And, yes he (the Magic Man) is wearing a top hat and cape, and carrying a wand. Ray the Voice helpfully informs everyone that this is the first RCW appearances by all three men. The match has only been underway for a short period when the Magic Man blatantly attacks McVicious, in the center of the ring no less. It's Honkey Kong, along with his keeper/manager Jingo Wallabee, out to save McVicious. Somebody comes up with the bright idea to make this a tag match and it's a restart.

Match #3b -- Tag Team Match
Shawn Vincent & The Magic Man vs. Scott McVicious & Honkey Kong
I believe this is Honkey Kong's first appearance in a RCW ring as well. Anyway, Honkey Kong and the Magic Man start in the ring. The Magic Man pulls out a deck of cards and invites Kong to pick a card. In one motion - Kong smacks the Magic Man upside the head, knocking the cards away. The Magic Man is out cold and that's the match. It's bananas for Honkey Kong. Both 3a and 3b equaled a mercifully short match, where the primary purpose was to introduce the new guys. To bastardize one of Stan Callahan's favorite quotes - "It is what it was".

Match #4 -- "Mr. Beautiful" Rudy Russo vs. Chino Reyes
Chino Reyes is next up to make his first appearance. This is his first time wrestling for RCW although he has wrestled for other San Antonio area promotions. Russo negates Chino's size advantage by cheating. Reyes throws some of the better looking punches I've seen lately. Russo's underhanded tactics prove too much and he gets the win by rollup (feet on the rope of course).
Numero Dos is out to present the award for "Best Physique - Male". And the winner is... Hernandez (not present). Dos dances shirtless as I feel a part of me die inside.

**INTERMISSION**

The last of the new faces makes her way to the ring. She is Samantha Carlson and is apparently being trained by Sho Funaki himself. Pretty girl, but not wrestling tonight. She is here to present the award for "Tag Team of the Year". And the winners are... The Karate Kids. So promptly out march the reigning RCW Tag Team champions San Antonio's Most Unwanted (Spector, Pink, Major Mike). Pink snatches the plaque away from young Miss Carlson. Spector feels his team should be the tag team of the year. Out come the Texas Hitmen. Skitzo demands a title shot between the Hitmen and the Unwanted right now! Spector, seemingly having lost his mind, agrees.

Match #5 -- RCW Tag Team Championship Match
The Texas Hitmen: Big Dogg & Skitzo vs. (c) San Antonio's Most Unwanted: Joey Spector & Pink
Pink actually starts the match facing off with Skitzo. That doesn't last long. Spector manages to survive the early onslaught by the Hitmen, even after being doubleteamed. It's Pink, however, who turns the match in favor of the Unwanted with a hotshot off the apron on Skitzo. The Unwanted work over Big Dogg's knee. Nothing fancy here, mostly kicks and stomps with a spinning toe hold thrown in for good measure. Hot tag to Skitzo. Big spinebuster on Pink. Major Mike is on the apron to distract the referee. Belt shot to Skitzo. Major Mike falls off the apron landing on a young woman in the front row. Pink, with an assist from Spector, covers Skitzo for the three. The champions retain.
Tonight's main event was scheduled to be a #1 Contender's Match for the RCW Heavyweight Championship, contested between Ray Rowe and Jax Dane. Unfortunately Dane isn't here (weather conditions). Ray Rowe is here however and challenges anyone in the back to come out and face him. Girard St. Christopher enters this metallic igloo masquerading as a warehouse wearing nothing but a speedo. Rowe is not impressed. Ann Dromeda is out to make it a party. So we have a three way elimination match for the #1 Contendership for the RCW Heavyweight Championship.

Main Event -- #1 Contender's Match for RCW Heavyweight Title
3-Way Elimination Match
Ray Rowe vs. Girard St. Christopher vs. Ann Dromeda
An eager yet confused Ann Dromeda thinks the announcer said threesome. Eventually a match gets underway. Rowe suplexes Ann Dromeda right on her head. She repays him with the dreaded testicular claw. Rowe uses a full-nelson into a reverse Go 2 Sleep to eliminate Ann Dromeda. Big Exploder, now it's St. Christopher who lands on his head. Rowe follows up with the reverse Go 2 Sleep but St. Christopher kicks out of the pin attempt. Frustrated, Rowe just starts to choke St. Christopher out and refuses to break on the referee's command. So the referee calls for the bell. St. Christopher apparently not realizing he has won pushes the referee. Now it's a double DQ.
As the combatants are separated, next month's main event is announced as a triple threat match for the RCW Heavyweight Championship. Champion Lance Hoyt will face off against Girard St. Christopher and Ray Rowe. Thankfully, this will take place within the warm confines of the Good Shepherd.
