New Millennium Wrestling presents "Royal Pains"

February 26, 2010

Balch Springs Recreation Center - Balch Springs, TX

This is New Millennium Wrestling's first show of 2011 and it looks to be a notable one. Headlining is Jerry "The King" Lawler in a singles match against Matt Riviera (wrestler, actor, reality TV personality). Also on tap for tonight is two title matches as well as the first two inductions into the NMW Ring of Honor (their hall-of-fame).

The (relatively) new home arena of New Millennium Wrestling is just outside of Dallas in the city of Balch Springs, Texas. This is my first time to a NMW show (Dallas is a four hour drive from Houston). The Balch Springs Recreation Center is a decent enough facility. The crowd looks to be around 250. Lance Romance is here broadcasting his Playaz Perspective as a pre-show on www.lanceromance.com (Ustream).

As ring announcer Nigel Rabid starts the introduction to the first match he is interrupted by the Dark Circle. Well, Apoc anyway. Apoc informs us that Tim Storm missed his flight and so the Dark Circle won't be defending their titles tonight. This brings out the Big Time Playas (Scott McKenzie and Danny Matthews). According to Matthews the deal was the Playas were to face "whoever holds the tag titles" and Apoc is holding the titles. (He was holding both belts.) Apoc who isn't about to face these two guys alone, announces he has a backup plan. Michael Barry will be joining the Dark Circle (at least for tonight) and subbing for Tim Storm.

Match #1 -- NMW Tag Team Championship Match
The Big Time Playas: Scott McKenzie & Danny Matthews vs. (c) The Dark Circle: Apoc & Michael Barry
Apoc gets himself in trouble right away. Barry fares only a little better. Finally Apoc trips McKenzie up and the makeshift Dark Circle take control. For the next several minutes Apoc and Barry make McKenzie their personal whipping boy. A single lariat puts Barry down long enough for McKenzie to crawl to his corner and make the tag. Matthews comes in, throws a couple of punches and a kick, connects with a leg drop driver on Apoc, then promptly tags McKenzie back in. Even McKenzie seemed surprised by that. Apoc hits a Death Valley Bomb on McKenzie and covers but Barry is still the legal man. Matthews finally decides to do somothing and knocks Apoc to the outside. Superkick by McKenzie puts Barry on the mat. Matthews with a top rope splash on Barry. McKenzie covers for the three. The Big Time Playas are the new NMW Tag Team Champions.

Nigel Rabid introduces Jerry Lawler. Standing ovation for the King. Lawler's remarks to the fervent crowd are interrupted by Matt Riviera and his manager Rich Rude. Lawler wants to go with Riviera right now. And... it's another interruption. This time it's the NMW General Manager Kyle Davis, escorted by Genesis Personal Security (Carrion Arcane and Kristopher Haiden). Davis is upset with Lawler for not winning the WWE championship match he had with the Miz on the Sunday prior. He (Davis) wanted to charge everyone double to see the WWE champion and accuses Lawler of costing him money. Davis announces he is canceling the main event and asks Security to escort Lawler to the parking lot. Lawler asks the crowd if anyone might join him out in the parking lot. The majority answer in the affirmative. Lawler asks how many here might stop at the door on the way out and demand their money back. The threat of refunds makes Davis reconsider. The main event is back on. Lawler has had more than enough of this nonsense and decides to physically remove Davis out to the parking lot. Riviera bails. Genesis Security attacks Lawler. One meeting of the minds later and that's it for Genesis. Lawler stands tall as Davis and Genesis storm off to the back.

Match #2 -- Wally Darkmon vs. Franco D'Angelo
Wally Darkmon resembles a mid 70s era Alice Cooper with short hair. He doesn't have a top hat but does carry a cane. Franco D'Angelo's moniker is "The Beast". So who do you think is going to win? D'Angelo was scheduled to wrestle Scot Summers but apparently G.M. Davis has banned Summers from the building. He (D'Angelo) makes it clear he is not interested in facing off with Darkmon. Turning his back is a mistake. From behind, Darkmon uses his cane to take out D'Angelo's left knee. D'Angelo's down. A second blow to the knee snaps the cane. From here, Darkmon's all about assaulting the knee. Any time D'Angelo shows some offensive momentum, Darkmon cuts him off with a leg attack. D'Angelo still has the power advantage though and is finally able to kick Darkmon over the top rope, giving himself some time to recover. Darkmon walks right into a superkick (D'Angelo used the ropes to support himself), but D'Angelo is unable to cover. Darkmon retrieves whats left of his cane and this time walks right into a thrust spinebuster from D'Angelo. Cover by D'Angelo and that's it. Just once I'd like to see someone win with pyschology (in this case the leg attack). D'Angelo doesn't celebrate, he just gingerly walks to the back.

Match #3 -- Danny Saint vs. Action Jackson
Jackson was originally scheduled to wrestle Mike Foxx, instead he got Danny Saint. This was a glorified squash by Jackson who spent much of the match playing to the crowd. The Big Booya (RockBottom) put Saint away.

Postmatch, Lance Romance is in the ring, ostensibly to interview Action Jackson. Romance's crony in the International Playaz Club, C-Diddy (Canyon) attacks Jackson from behind and a beatdown is on. The Playaz seem to be trying to put Jackson out of action and are targeting his left arm. NMW officials finally regain some order but not before the damage is done. Romance and C-Diddy swagger about as Jackson is helped to the back.

Just before the intermission, a brief, somber induction is held for Cooper Dixon into the NMW Ring of Honor. Dixon, the first inductee into the Ring of Honor, was a friend/fan of the NMW who passed away (cancer) at only 4 years old.

** INTERMISSION **

Just after intermission the induction of Skandor Akbar is held. Will Riggs (headman of NMW) conducts this one himself. The mood here is more of a celebration of the achievements of the late General. The list of wrestlers that Akbar trained/mentored etc... is staggering.

Match #4 -- NMW Heavyweight Championship Match
Mace Malone vs. (c) Brandon Collins
The intermission and induction ceremonies must of killed the crowd because they are absolutely dead during this match. The champion (Collins) just seems to be going through the motions, not projecting any emotion at all. Also, the fact that the heel (Mace) has the flashier offense doesn't help matters. Tepid nearfall section highlighted by Collins slingshot springboard 450 and even that seems just to be there because Collins can do it. Both men tumble to the outside. Referee David Manning counts to 20 like he's got somewhere else to be. Double DQ.

Main Event -- Matt Riviera vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler
Lawler is out first. Matt Riviera, accompanied by Rich Rude, enters in full Ric Flair mode. The referee for this contest, Sam "Bling Bling" Miller is gesturing to Riviera. Whoa... Rich Rude is being sent to the back. It looks like Riviera will have to face Lawler all by his lonesome. Riviera wastes no time in making with the underhanded tactics but Lawler's a veteran and knows all the tricks. Riviera walks right into a kick to the gut and Lawler's going for a piledriver. Riveria struggles himself free and quickly escapes to the outside. Now Riviera's heading to the back. "Bling Bling" is starting the count out. Wait... Riviera's coming back and Rude is coming with him. "Bling Bling" lets Rude stay out at ringside but threatens to throw him out of the building if he interferes. Lawler and Riviera lockup again. And as soon as they come near Rude - he grabs Lawler's leg. Lawler complains and Rude gets a warning. Lockup again. And once again Rude grabs the leg. This goes on for awhile. Rude interferes every chance he gets but always manages to get away with it. Riviera of course, takes full advantage of this and systematically starts to work over Lawler. But in the world of professional wrestling what goes around often comes around. Corner mount by Riviera. Rude is up on the apron. This time it's Lawler who takes advantage of the referee being distracted. Low blow to Riviera. Lawler's drops the shoulder strap and the punches start to fly. Lawler with the corner mount. 10 punches to the head. Riviera stumbles out and over to the corner right. Corner mount by Lawler. 10 more punches to the head. Once again Riviera stumbles out and over to the corner right and you can see where this is going. Somehow after a trip to all four corners and 42 punches to the head (Lawler lost count), Riviera is still standing. A dropkick from Lawler finally puts him down. Uh-oh... Lawler accidentally knocked Riviera into the referee. "Bling Bling" is down. General Manager Kyle Davis, carrying a briefcase, takes this opportunity to sneak out from the back and into the ring. Just as Lawler is setting Riviera up for a piledriver Davis hits him from behind with the briefcase. And... nothing, Lawler just turns around and glares at Davis. The G.M. makes a hasty retreat to the outside. Unfortunately, Lawler makes the cardinal mistake of turning his back to his oppoonent. Briefcase shot by Riviera. Lawler's down. Riviera covers and it's a three count. No kickout from Lawler. Wait... the backup referee (David Manning) is out. Manning and "Bling Bling" talk it over. It's a restart. Lawler sneaks behind Riviera and rolls him up. One... two... three... that's it! Lawler wins! Davis appears to be having a meltdown and says something about firing Manning. Franco D'Angelo hobbles out and grabs ahold of Davis. D"Angelo tosses the G.M. in to Lawler. Old school Memphis style piledriver for Davis. The show closes with The King and The Beast holding court in the ring as the familiar strains of The Great Gate of Kiev fill the rec center.
